Linking Belize City’s North and South sides is one of the country’s most significant historical landmarks ~ The Swing Bridge. Built in 1922, and still in major use today, this narrow metal structure is the only manual swing bridge in the entire world. Being located in the city’s major commercial center (Albert Street and Queen Street), the Bridge supports a constant flow of traffic everyday. Visitors interested in witnessing the daily swinging of the bridge should be on either side at 6:00 in the morning or 6:00 in the evening. For almost a century, the Bridge has been manually swung to allow large sailboats and vessels up and down the Haulover Creek. Traffic on both sides of the Bridge remains stationary for about 30 minutes when the Bridge unlocks the waterway.
