Belize is a unique country not only environmentally but also culturally and historically.  Unlike other Central American countries, Belize was settled by the British towards the end of the 17th Century.  The civil encounters with the Maya who occupied the territory, the ever threatening battles with the Spanish, the search for Mahogany and the migration of refugees have molded the history of this small country.  Because of the British influence, Belize became the only country in Central American whose first language is English.  But speaking English is far from what makes Belize culturally and historically fascinating.  The transformation from a settlement comprised of ex-pirates, to a dazzling inter-racial society that includes six major ethnic groups who among them speak eight languages, has made Belize what it now is: A land of the Free.

It is this rich culture and history that we want to share with visitors to Old Belize Cultural & Historical Center.  Our goal is that all visitors who take a tour of our facility will leave with a unique and memorable experience and appreciation for Belize.   Our tour features life-size re-created displays that begins inside the rainforest, and culminates in an early 1900’s Belize Town Street.   The tour highlights the Maya, Mestizo, Garifuna and Creole cultures and includes several displays such as a chiclero camp (which tells the origin of chewing gum), and the process of cutting mahogany for export (which features a 150 year old mahogany stump).

Old Belize is located on the Western Highway, just 5 miles from Belize City.  It also features the Sibun Bite Bar & Grill, which is the perfect place to relax and unwind in a tropical and rustic seaside atmosphere.   Sibun Bite offers a variety of food and drinks, including appetizers, grilled chicken, grilled shrimp, burgers,  burrito combos and salads to name a few.
Also available is the Old Belize Gift Shop.  The Old Belize Gift Shop offers a wide yet unique variety of Belizean–made souvenirs.  From books to music CD’s to wines and preserves, our gift shop is truly all Belizean.
