Across the street from the historic St.
John’s Cathedral stands another shining landmark of
Belize’s colonial past. The old Governor House, now
converted to Belize’s House of Culture, was constructed
in the mid 1800’s in the beautiful Colonial-Caribbean
architecture of the era. Today, this elegant two-story mansion
has been restored to its original appearance and sits in
a beautifully manicured yard in the middle of the bustling
city. Home to interesting exhibits of historical photographs
and records, polished silverware and glassware collections,
beautifully carved furniture pieces and a maritime collection,
the House of Culture takes visitors on a journey into Belize’s
colonial history. Open on weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00
p.m., the House of Culture also offers art and music classes,
is a frequent host of small musical concerts and provides
the perfect setting for romantic weddings in the city.
